About Us

About Us

At Akoma, we choose to do business in a way that benefits everyone involved from the ethical sourcing of raw ingredients to providing all natural skin care and spa products that are of high quality and great value. And in doing so, we’re committed to having a positive impact on emerging economies in the developing world, particularly in Ghana where we are instrumental in maintaining cooperatives in various parts of the country that process and produce our Shea Butter and Palm Oil products.

Collecting, processing, and selling shea nuts and shea butter at the Akoma Cooperative Multipurpose Society in Ghana is a important source of income for women in the community. And the workers harvest, gather and prepare the raw ingredients in a way that does not disturb the local ecosystem. Similar coops are being developed to provide employment for those who wish to rise up above the object poverty so common in their villages.

By following a global consciousness and strictly adhering to Fairtrade guidelines, Akoma represents a new breed of companies that focus on
fair prices, good working conditions, sustainability and fair terms of trade.

Just as important to us is offering an extended line of high quality skin care and spa products that are all natural, affordable, and bring healing, comfort and a sense of luxury to our growing list of customers around the globe.

About Akoma and Fairtrade

With a sharp eye on Fairtrade policies, Akoma Skincare works with the Akoma Cooperative Multipurpose Society, located in Bolgatanga, a poverty-stricken area in the upper east region of Ghana. Unemployment is high in this area and up to now, there have been very few opportunities for the people in this village to improve their condition.

One of the most rewarding part of working with the Cooperative is seeing the group open themselves up to explore other crafts and learn new skills such as dressmaking, soap making and cocoa butter production to help the cooperative grow.

Fairtrade Certification

Fairtrade is about fair prices, good working conditions, sustainability and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. Companies are required to pay sustainable prices (which must never fall lower than the market price) and an additional amount, the Fairtrade Premium, for social and environmental projects.

About Fairtrade and beauty products
In June 2009 Fairtrade certified UK beauty products first became available. Fairtrade certified beauty products contain Fairtrade certified ingredients (like our Raw Organic Shea Butter) and have been certified by the Fairtrade Foundation to carry the FAIRTRADE Mark.
